Pokémon Ultra Violet Fossils: Helix, Dome Fossil and Old Amber Guide

Pokémon Ultra Violet lets you collect all three Generation 1 fossil Pokémon in one save file. Unlike standard Pokémon FireRed, where you must choose either the Helix Fossil or Dome Fossil in Mt. Moon, Ultra Violet allows you to take both fossils. You can also collect Old Amber later and revive all three fossil Pokémon at the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab.

This guide explains where to get every fossil, which Pokémon each item restores, how fossil revival works, and which fossil Pokémon may fit your team best.

What Are Fossils in Pokémon Ultra Violet?

Fossils are special key items that can be restored into extinct Pokémon. They are not used directly in battle. Instead, you take each fossil to the scientist at the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab, who restores it into a living Pokémon.

Ultra Violet keeps the fossils in their familiar FireRed locations but removes the normal Mt. Moon restriction. You can collect both fossils after defeating the Super Nerd, so you do not have to choose between Omanyte and Kabuto.

Fossil Item Revived Pokémon Type Evolution
Helix Fossil Omanyte Rock Water Omastar at level 40
Dome Fossil Kabuto Rock Water Kabutops at level 40
Old Amber Aerodactyl Rock Flying Does not evolve

All three fossil Pokémon are useful for Pokédex completion. Since Ultra Violet is designed to let one player obtain Pokémon from the first three generations in a single save, you can keep every fossil item instead of leaving one behind.

How to Get Both Fossils in Mt. Moon

Mt. Moon is the first place where you find fossil items. You visit it while traveling from Pewter City toward Cerulean City.

In normal FireRed, you defeat the Super Nerd near the end of Mt. Moon and must choose between the Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil. Taking one normally makes the other unavailable.

Pokémon Ultra Violet changes this choice. After defeating the Super Nerd, you are allowed to take both the Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil. This lets you revive both Omanyte and Kabuto later without trading, restarting, or using cheats.

⚡ Ultra Violet Feature

Standard FireRed makes you sacrifice one fossil permanently. Ultra Violet gives you both the Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil in Mt. Moon, allowing you to complete your collection solo.

Reach the end of Mt. Moon

Travel through Mt. Moon as part of the main story. Fight the Team Rocket Grunts and continue through the cave until you reach the Super Nerd guarding the two fossils.

Bring a few healing items and Poké Balls before entering. Mt. Moon also contains useful early-game items and Pokémon, so it is worth checking side paths instead of rushing through the cave.

Defeat the Super Nerd

Defeat the Super Nerd in the final part of Mt. Moon to access the fossil rewards.

In Ultra Violet, this battle unlocks both fossils. You do not need to decide whether you want Omanyte or Kabuto at this point.

Take the Helix Fossil

The Helix Fossil restores into Omanyte. Pick it up after defeating the Super Nerd and keep it in your Bag until you reach Cinnabar Island.

Do not leave it behind. Ultra Violet gives you the chance to collect both Mt. Moon fossils, so there is no reason to sacrifice Omanyte for Kabuto.

Take the Dome Fossil

The Dome Fossil restores into Kabuto. Collect it from the same Mt. Moon reward area after taking the Helix Fossil.

With both fossil items in your Bag, you can later obtain Omanyte and Kabuto in the same playthrough.

Helix Fossil Location and Omanyte

The Helix Fossil is found in Mt. Moon after you defeat the Super Nerd near the end of the cave. In Ultra Violet, you can take it together with the Dome Fossil.

What does the Helix Fossil become?

Take the Helix Fossil to the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab to restore it into Omanyte.

Omanyte is a Rock/Water-type Pokémon. Its typing gives it useful resistance to Normal- and Flying-type attacks, but it is weak to Grass-, Electric-, Fighting-, Ground-, and Rock-type moves.

Omanyte evolution

Omanyte evolves into Omastar at level 40.

Omastar has high Special Attack and Defense, making it a better fit for players who prefer a slower but durable Pokémon that can use special Water-type moves effectively.

Is Omastar good in Pokémon Ultra Violet?

Omastar can be a good choice if your team needs a defensive Water-type with strong Special Attack. It is less suitable if you need a fast Pokémon because Omanyte and Omastar are slow.

Keep Omastar away from strong Grass- and Electric-type attacks. Those are its biggest weaknesses because of its Rock/Water typing.

Dome Fossil Location and Kabuto

The Dome Fossil is also found in Mt. Moon after defeating the Super Nerd. Standard FireRed makes you choose between the Dome Fossil and Helix Fossil, but Ultra Violet lets you take both.

What does the Dome Fossil become?

Take the Dome Fossil to the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab to restore it into Kabuto.

Kabuto is a Rock/Water-type Pokémon, so it shares the same main type weaknesses as Omanyte. However, its stats and battle role are different.

Kabuto evolution

Kabuto evolves into Kabutops at level 40.

Kabutops has higher Attack than Special Attack, so it usually fits teams that use physical moves more often. It can be a useful choice for players who want a physical Rock/Water-type instead of Omastar.

⚡ Evolution Level

Both Omanyte and Kabuto evolve at Level 40 into Omastar and Kabutops. Train them to 40 before challenging endgame Gym Leaders or the Elite Four.

Is Kabutops good in Pokémon Ultra Violet?

Kabutops is a strong physical attacker and can work well with moves that use its Attack stat. Like Omastar, it must be protected from Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon.

The good news is that Ultra Violet lets you obtain both Kabutops and Omastar, so you do not have to treat this as a permanent choice. You can revive both fossils and decide which one fits your party later.

Old Amber Location and Aerodactyl

Old Amber is the third fossil item in Pokémon Ultra Violet. It restores into Aerodactyl, a fast Rock/Flying-type Pokémon.

Where to get Old Amber

Old Amber is obtained from the scientist inside the Pewter Museum of Science. You need HM01 Cut before you can reach the museum’s back area and speak with him.

You return to Pewter City later in the story after obtaining Cut. Once you have Old Amber, keep it in your Bag until you can visit the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab.

⚡ Exploration Prerequisite

Old Amber is obtained from the Pewter Museum of Science, but you cannot enter the back area until you obtain HM01 Cut in Vermilion City and backtrack to Pewter City.

What does Old Amber become?

Old Amber restores into Aerodactyl.

Aerodactyl is Rock/Flying-type. It is much faster than Omastar and Kabutops, giving it a different role on a team.

Does Aerodactyl evolve?

No. Aerodactyl does not evolve in Pokémon Ultra Violet.

Ultra Violet uses Generation 3 mechanics and does not include Mega Evolution, so Aerodactyl remains in its normal form throughout the game.

⚡ Gen 3 Battle Form

Aerodactyl does not evolve. Pokémon Ultra Violet is based on Generation 3 mechanics, so Mega Evolutions do not exist in this version.

Is Aerodactyl good in Pokémon Ultra Violet?

Aerodactyl is a good choice for players who want speed. It can move before many opponents and use powerful physical Rock- and Flying-type attacks.

However, it has several common weaknesses, including Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, and Steel. Give it team support and avoid leaving it against attacks that can defeat it quickly.

How to Revive Fossils on Cinnabar Island

Once you have a fossil, travel to Cinnabar Island and enter the Pokémon Lab. The scientist in the lab can restore the Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil, or Old Amber into a Pokémon.

Go To Cinnabar Island

Cinnabar Island becomes accessible later in the main story. You can reach it after gaining the required travel abilities and progressing through Kanto.

Do not worry if you collect fossils early. They remain safely in your Bag until you are ready to restore them.

Visit the Pokémon Lab

Enter the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab and speak to the fossil-restoration scientist. Give them one fossil item to begin the process.

The lab restores fossil Pokémon at level 30, so make sure you have enough room in your party or PC Boxes before collecting them.

⚡ Cinnabar Lab Level

Fossil Pokémon are restored at level 30. Ensure you have empty space in your active party before talking to the scientist, or check your PC boxes if your party is full.

Restore one fossil at a time

Hand over a single fossil, then collect the restored Pokémon before giving the scientist another fossil.

This is the simplest way to stay organized when you have Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil, and Old Amber. It also makes it easier to save your game between each restoration.

Best Fossil Pokémon in Pokémon Ultra Violet

There is no single best fossil Pokémon for every team. Omastar, Kabutops, and Aerodactyl each serve a different role.

Because Pokémon Ultra Violet lets you obtain all three, you can revive each fossil and choose the one that fills the biggest gap in your party.

Pokémon Type Best quality Main concern
Omastar Rock Water High Special Attack and Defense Slow; weak to Grass and Electric
Kabutops Rock Water High physical Attack Weak to Grass and Electric
Aerodactyl Rock Flying High Speed Several common weaknesses

Best for Special Attack: Omastar

Choose Omastar if you need a slower but durable Pokémon that can use special Water-type moves well. Its high Defense also helps it take physical hits.

Best for physical attacks: Kabutops

Choose Kabutops if your team needs a physical attacker. It is better suited to physical Rock- and Water-type moves than Omastar.

Best for Speed: Aerodactyl

Choose Aerodactyl if your team needs a fast attacker. It can be especially useful when your other Pokémon are slow and struggle to act before opponents.

Conclusion

Pokémon Ultra Violet removes one of FireRed’s most frustrating collection choices by letting you take both fossils in Mt. Moon. Collect the Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil after the Super Nerd battle, return to Pewter Museum after getting Cut for Old Amber, and revive each item at the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab.

Omastar, Kabutops, and Aerodactyl all offer something different for your team. Save before restoration, revive one fossil at a time, and keep all three if you are working toward a complete Pokédex.
