Pokémon Ultra Violet Starters: How to Get All Gen 1, 2 and 3 Starters
Pokémon Ultra Violet gives you far more starter options than a normal Pokémon FireRed playthrough. You can choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle from Professor Oak, refuse Oak’s three choices to catch your own first Pokémon, and later find all nine regional starter Pokémon from Generations 1–3 in the wild.
This guide explains every starter route, the special research-facility encounters, starter locations, evolution levels, and when each area becomes available. It also helps beginners decide which first Pokémon is best for their team.
How Starters Work in Pokémon Ultra Violet
There are two ways to receive your very first Pokémon in Ultra Violet.
The normal method is choosing one of Professor Oak’s Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The alternative method is refusing Oak’s three Poké Balls so that he takes you to a special research facility, where you can catch a different Pokémon as your starter.
Your opening choice matters for the early game, but it does not stop you from collecting the other Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn starters later.
Choose a Kanto Starter from Professor Oak
Professor Oak offers the familiar three Pokémon at the start of the game:
- Bulbasaur
- Charmander
- Squirtle
This is the best route if you want a standard FireRed-style opening. You select one of Oak’s Poké Balls, battle your rival, and begin your journey normally.
The other two Kanto starters can still be caught around Pallet Town, so you can realistically obtain all three before challenging Brock.
Catch Your Own First Pokémon
If you speak to Professor Oak but do not choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, he offers a different option. Oak takes you to a fenced research field with tall grass and gives you special Poké Balls, rocks, and bait, similar to the Safari Zone system.
You can catch one Pokémon there to become your starter. This is a one-time visit. You cannot return after leaving, so save your game before entering the field.
If you use this option, your rival chooses Charmander.
Research Facility Starter Encounter Rates
The special starter field has nine possible Pokémon. Pichu is the most common choice, while Houndour, Spheal, Larvitar, and Dratini are the rarest.
| Pokémon | Type | Encounter Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Pichu | Electric |
30% |
| Machop | Fighting |
20% |
| Ralts | Psychic |
10% |
| Gastly | GhostPoison |
10% |
| Trapinch | Ground |
10% |
| Houndour | DarkFire |
5% |
| Spheal | IceWater |
5% |
| Larvitar | RockGround |
5% |
| Dratini | Dragon |
5% |
Pichu and Machop are easier to encounter if you want to catch a starter quickly. Larvitar and Dratini are much rarer, but they eventually evolve into Tyranitar and Dragonite. Ralts becomes Gardevoir, while Gastly can evolve into Gengar through Ultra Violet’s revised no-trade evolution system.
Can You Change Your Starter Later?
You cannot replace your original starter choice without beginning a new save file. However, Ultra Violet gives you many opportunities to catch other useful Pokémon as you progress.
You can catch the three Kanto starters near Pallet Town, find the Johto starters on the Sevii Islands, and obtain the Hoenn starters through 4-Points Isle. Your first Pokémon shapes the start of your journey, but it does not prevent you from building the team you want later.
Kanto Starter Locations
Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are available from the beginning of the game. Along with Oak’s starter selection, all three can be found in the grass around Pallet Town.
This is especially useful if you choose the research-facility starter. You can still catch a Kanto starter before reaching Brock and create a more balanced early team.
Bulbasaur Location
Bulbasaur can be found in the grass in and around Pallet Town from the beginning of the game. It can also be encountered later on Route 21.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | GrassPoison |
| Location | Pallet Town area and Route 21 |
| Available | From the start of the game |
| Encounter method | Wild grass encounters |
| Evolves into | Ivysaur at level 16, Venusaur at level 32 |
Bulbasaur is one of the easiest starters for beginners. Grass-type moves are strong against Brock’s Rock-type Pokémon and Misty’s Water-types, giving you a comfortable path through the first two Gyms.
Charmander Location
Charmander can be found around Pallet Town from the beginning of the game. It also appears in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island once you can reach the island.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Fire |
| Location | Pallet Town area and Pokémon Mansion |
| Available | Pallet Town from the start; Pokémon Mansion after reaching Cinnabar Island |
| Encounter method | Wild grass encounters |
| Evolves into | Charmeleon at level 16, Charizard at level 36 |
Charmander is a good choice if you want Charizard on your final team. It has a more difficult start than Bulbasaur or Squirtle because Brock’s Rock-types resist Fire attacks, but Charizard later gains Flying typing and useful matchups against Grass- and Fighting-type Pokémon.
Squirtle Location
Squirtle can be caught around Pallet Town from the start of the game. It is also found later in the Seafoam Islands, which require Surf and Strength to explore properly.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Water |
| Location | Pallet Town area and Seafoam Islands |
| Available | Pallet Town from the start; Seafoam Islands after gaining Surf and Strength |
| Encounter method | Wild encounters |
| Evolves into | Wartortle at level 16, Blastoise at level 36 |
Squirtle is one of the safest choices for new players. Water-type attacks are effective against Brock’s Rock-type team, and Blastoise remains a reliable defensive Water-type throughout the main adventure.
Which Kanto Starter Is Best?
For most beginners, Bulbasaur is the easiest choice because it performs well against both Brock and Misty.
Choose Squirtle if you want a balanced, durable Water-type that remains useful for the entire story. Choose Charmander if Charizard is your favorite, or if you want a slightly more challenging early-game experience.
Johto Starter Locations
The Johto starters appear on the Sevii Islands. You will not find them at the beginning of the game, but they become available as the story opens island travel after the Cinnabar Gym.
Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile are all wild encounters, so bring enough Poké Balls before searching their areas.
Chikorita Location
Chikorita is found at Five Isle Meadow on Five Island in the Sevii Islands.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Grass |
| Location | Five Isle Meadow, Five Island |
| Available | After reaching the Sevii Islands with the Tri-Pass |
| Encounter method | Wild grass encounters |
| Evolves into | Bayleef at level 16, Meganium at level 32 |
Five Isle Meadow has a large grassy area, so walk through several patches if Chikorita does not appear immediately. Meganium is a sturdy defensive Grass-type and can be a useful late-game choice if you need support and bulk.
Cyndaquil Location
Cyndaquil can be found on Mt. Ember on One Island.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Fire |
| Location | Mt. Ember, One Island |
| Available | On your first Sevii Islands visit after the Cinnabar Gym |
| Encounter method | Wild encounters on the mountain |
| Evolves into | Quilava at level 14, Typhlosion at level 36 |
Cyndaquil is the earliest Johto starter you can encounter. Mt. Ember is also associated with Moltres, so it is a useful place to visit when you are prepared for both starter hunting and legendary Pokémon exploration.
Totodile Location
Totodile is found on Water Path on Six Island.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Water |
| Location | Water Path, Six Island |
| Available | After Six Island becomes reachable with the Rainbow Pass |
| Encounter method | Wild encounters along the route |
| Evolves into | Croconaw at level 18, Feraligatr at level 30 |
Totodile is the last Johto starter most players find because Water Path becomes available later than the first Sevii Islands areas. Feraligatr has high Attack and becomes a strong physical Water-type team member.
Which Johto Starter Should You Catch?
Choose Cyndaquil if you want the earliest available Johto starter and need a Fire-type for your team.
Choose Chikorita if you want a defensive Grass-type and a Pokémon that can support your party with useful moves. Choose Totodile if you prefer physical Water-type attacks and do not mind waiting until later in the game.
Hoenn Starter Locations
The Hoenn starter Pokémon are found on 4-Points Isle, an area added in Pokémon Ultra Violet. The island contains Generation 3 Pokémon and unlocks more sections as you progress through the main story.
To begin accessing 4-Points Isle, speak to the little girl in the southernmost house in Vermilion City after beating Lt. Surge.
4-Points Isle Unlock Stages
The island opens gradually. Treecko and Mudkip are available early, while Torchic requires much later story progress.
| Story Progress | Newly Available Area | Starter Pokémon Available |
|---|---|---|
| Finish the S.S. Anne | 4-Points Isle Town, Dread Mountain Prairie, Dread Mountain | Treecko and Mudkip |
| Defeat Team Rocket at Silph Co. | The Catacombs | None |
| Obtain Strength and Surf | Deeper Dread Mountain areas | None |
| Defeat the eighth Gym and obtain Earthquake | Haunted Forest and Meteor Site | Torchic |
| Defeat the Elite Four and rival | Guardian Meadow | None |
This means you can catch Treecko and Mudkip well before the Pokémon League, but Torchic does not become available until after you defeat the eighth Gym.
Treecko Location
Treecko can be found in the grass outside Dread Mountain on 4-Points Isle.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Grass |
| Location | Outside Dread Mountain, 4-Points Isle |
| Available | After first reaching 4-Points Isle following the S.S. Anne |
| Encounter method | Wild grass encounters |
| Evolves into | Grovyle at level 16, Sceptile at level 36 |
Treecko is one of the first Hoenn Pokémon you can catch. Sceptile has high Speed, making it a useful choice for players who prefer fast attackers that can strike before many opponents.
Torchic Location
Torchic is found at the Meteor Site on 4-Points Isle.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Fire |
| Location | Meteor Site, 4-Points Isle |
| Available | After defeating the eighth Gym and unlocking Meteor Site |
| Encounter method | Wild encounters near the meteor crash site |
| Evolves into | Combusken at level 16, Blaziken at level 36 |
Torchic is the latest regional starter to become available. Its final evolution, Blaziken, gains Fighting typing and can hit Steel- and Rock-type Pokémon with powerful Fighting moves. The Meteor Site also contains Jirachi-related content, so it is worth exploring carefully when it becomes available.
Mudkip Location
Mudkip can be found near the dock area of 4-Points Isle, where you arrive on the island.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Type | Water |
| Location | 4-Points Isle dock area |
| Available | As soon as you first reach 4-Points Isle after the S.S. Anne |
| Encounter method | Wild encounters near the dock |
| Evolves into | Marshtomp at level 16, Swampert at level 36 |
Mudkip is usually the first Hoenn starter players see because it appears close to the island’s arrival point. Its final form, Swampert, is Water/Ground-type and has only one weakness in Generation 3: Grass. This makes Mudkip an excellent later addition to nearly any team.
Which Hoenn Starter Is Best?
For general team strength, Mudkip is often the easiest recommendation because Swampert’s Water/Ground typing gives it only one weakness—Grass—in Generation 3.
Choose Treecko if you want a fast Grass-type attacker. Choose Torchic if you want Blaziken’s Fire/Fighting coverage and do not mind waiting until after the eighth Gym.

Can You Catch Every Starter Pokémon?
Yes. Pokémon Ultra Violet lets you obtain all nine standard starter Pokémon from Generations 1–3 during one playthrough. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle can be caught near Pallet Town from the start. Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile become available through the Sevii Islands, while Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip are found on 4-Points Isle.
Tips Before Choosing a Starter in Ultra Violet
- Save first: The research facility is a one-time area.
- Think about early battles: Dratini and Larvitar are strong later but harder to train early.
- Catch Kanto starters early: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are all available around Pallet Town.
- Balance your team: Choose later Pokémon that cover your starter’s weaknesses.
- Carry Poké Balls: You will need them for Johto and Hoenn starter hunts.
- Check story requirements: Treecko and Mudkip appear earlier than Torchic and Totodile
Conclusion
Pokémon Ultra Violet offers much greater freedom in choosing your starter compared to FireRed. You can start with a Kanto starter, select a unique partner at Oak’s lab, and later catch all nine starters from Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn.
For an easier start, choose Bulbasaur or Squirtle; for strength, opt for Machop; and for a challenging journey, go with Dratini or Larvitar. As you progress, visit the Sevii Islands and 4-Points Isle to add Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, and more Pokémon to your team.
